Identifying A Problem
The most common species in Britain are German and Oriental cockroaches. Adult cockroaches live for about 4-14 months, during which time females can produce up to 50 oothecae (egg sacs). Each ootheca contains 12-30 eggs. A female German cockroach would produce about 150 live offspring in an average 8 month lifetime.
Where and when cockroaches are found
Cockroaches require a concealed harbourage, high temperature, food, and moisture. They are nocturnal, will avoid daylight, and hide in cracks and crevices.
They are omnivorous (eat almost anything) including paper and old fabrics. They emerge mainly at night. They thrive at temperatures of 22 – 36c and need a good supply of water.
They are gregarious (live together in groups) and are mainly found in kitchens, bathrooms, toilets, boiler rooms, heating cupboards, pipe runs and ducting. Blocks of flats are particularly susceptible to infestation because of the ease with which they can gain access throughout the buildings.
