Where they come from

These insects often come from food products, including right from the factory, if it has been processed.  They may also come from seeds and herbs from the domestic garden or other natural products we store in our homes. 

Stored Product Insects are any insect which infest stored food, whether in the raw material state or processed.  They can be divided into three forms: Beetles, Moths and Mites. Within these three forms there are many families of SPI, shown in the list below … 

Flour Beetle, Sawtooth Grain and Merchant Grain Beetle, Rice and Grain Weevil, Indian Meal Moth, Warehouse Moth, Mites, Yellow Mealworm Beetle, Wine Moth, Australian Spider Beetle, Golden Spider Beetle, Biscuit or Drugstore Beetle, Cigarette Beetle, Spider Beetle, Biscuit or Drugstore Beetle, Cigarette Beetle, Larder Beetle.
 

Identifying a problem

Stored Product Insect pests can either be detected feeding and harboring in food trapped within the fabric of a premises or within spillage in dead spaces inside machinery itself.

  • It may be possible to see dead or live insects, or fragments, flying moths or moth excreta.
  • Damaged goods (e.g. holes), are common.
  • Moths and grain weevils leave the grain as hollow shells.
  • There is often a smell given off by taint from infestation of beetles or mites.
  • Look out for a double row of footprints left by beetles in their tracks.  Larvae will leave a solid line where it has dragged itself along. Moths will have footprints including wing marks.
  • Where food materials rest inside equipment, this is generally where infestation will be found.

All stored items should be searched for signs of infestation.  Check unopened products as they will be just as vulnerable. It is advisable to look in kitchen cupboards, pantry and cabinets, or wherever you store food products. Common products to find SPI would be cake mixes, spices, rice jars, biscuits, and wheat cracker boxes. One by one, check methodically a handful at a time.  Search through all open products first.

You may be able to treat the problem yourself without the need for our services, particularly in the home.  These points are useful to follow initially:
In every cabinet where you have found evidence of the insects, clear out the cabinets entirely, use a strong vacuum paying special attention to the cracks and crevices.  It is most important to vacuum underneath the shelves, as both larvae and adults will hide in and under these areas.  Good housekeeping and thorough vacuuming once a problem is spotted can make or break the job. If you do a good job, you won’t need to use any insecticide whatsoever.

If after all your efforts there is still evidence of an infestation, which is confirmed by us through undertaking a free survey for you, Arrowguard can provide a treatment involving the dissemination of a residual insecticide onto and around the areas affected.   If you do decide to use our professional service, please be advised to save a sample insect for our team to identify.
