Identifying a problem
If you think you have a problem with just one rat or mouse you may find that the problem is larger than you think because that one rat or mouse can lead to many more.
Rats and mice live in the most unsanitary places, and are carriers of serious health risk to humans – from their droppings and their constant incontinence.
Rats commonly live in drains, under concrete, where there are garbage refuse areas, kitchens, roof voids and other areas where a potential food and moisture source is available.
Usually the colder months of the year pose the most problems as these animals seek food and warmth inside buildings. Rats are common problems where a building is located near waterways, creeks, and canals or other places where a ready water supply is available.
Rats generally nest outdoors in burrows dug underneath houses or sheds and other buildings, or in piles of rubbish or timber, compost heaps and other discarded items in little-used places. Some rats however like the warmth and security of the cavities in walls and in the insulation found in lofts.
During the day rats usually stay in their nest, coming out at night to search for food. They don’t stray far from their nests, usually staying within 40 metres. Mice don’t travel very far at all and usually stay within a few metres of their nests. Their presence is often discovered through their droppings although signs of gnawing, scratching or tracks may also indicate activity.
Rats and Mice usually live anywhere between 6 and 36 months. Some species of rats can breed every two to three months and produce a litter of 8 to 12 offspring each time, so it does not take long for rat populations to increase many times over if left unchecked.
Here is a checklist to tell if you have mice or possibly rats in your property:
- Scratching, heavy scuttering or squeaking sounds behind floors, walls, or ceilings
- Distinctive sharp ammonic smell near main infestation areas.
- Small dark droppings if mice (sesame seed size), or larger if rats.
- Small shredded bits of paper or foil, or fabrics
- Wood shavings etc, damage or chewed parts of furniture
- Nests or nesting materials found in quiet places
- Rats will usually have burrows near entry points to premises
Our Assessment, Treatment and Guarantee
At Arrowguard we specialise in destroying these types of pests. First we conduct a survey of the premises followed by a specific treatment to ensure we control the population of mice in the quickest, humane and most convenient manner possible. A follow-up treatment is usually done 10 to 14 days after the initial treatment. The most common method we use is a rodenticide poison, usually in a form of grain bait or wax block. Sometimes however it is necessary to place trapping systems in locations where there is found to be food spillage. If rats have been a problem it will be necessary to place exterior bait stations outside of premises.
Safety Compliancy
On every treatment to destroy these pests we provide our clients with the relevant health and safety information. Arrowguard staff are fully trained, registered and licensed to use all chemicals and materials.

Cost For Treatment
While every rodent problem is different, here are some typical costs. Treatment is usually done in two stages. First we will come and do an inspection then lay down the baiting stations where applicable. We will then do a follow-up treatment and inspection 10 to 14 days after the initial treatment. Our usual charge for this total treatment would be from £90 + VAT.
Testimonials From Our Customers
I had a phobia of anything with long tails and when I saw something that described my fear race across my bedroom carpet I freaked! I contacted Arrowguard Pest Control and luckily they already had someone in the area. They appeared with unmarked vans, unobtrusively and the technicians were well presented. They dealt with the problem, quickly and humanely. They even put the kettle on for me!

Arrowguard arrived within their response time and treated without complaint a very difficult problem I had. The restaurant was due to open that evening and I had mice running around the kitchens and bar. The wonderful technician found the problem areas and took time out to proof up gaps under doors. He set down the protection and trapping systems and within a week we were in the clear.
